One of the many great kitchen debates involves backsplashes. Just as they do when considering cabinets, countertops, paint colors and flooring, Essex County homeowners care about factors such as cost, maintenance and resale value when they’re shopping for a new design. Glass mosaics and natural stones — such as travertine, marble, soapstone, granite and quartz — are two options that get the lion’s share of attention, so we decided to lay the pros and cons on the table. Use this head-to-head showdown to choose the winner for your kitchen space.
Appearance. Granite: The physical appearance of granite is quite different when compared to marble. Granite comprises a variety of colours because it has different stones melded into it, often quartz or even feldspar. Due to their multiple shades, these stones make every block of granite extremely unique.
Small formats continue to gain visibility in wall tile portfolios, reinforced by the enduring popularity of subway tiles. The most popular formats appear to be 200 by 200mm (no surprise given the strength of traditional encaustic tiles), 150 by 300mm and 100 by 750mm; although 75 by 300mm is also growing in popularity and influence. This relatively new market segment continues to gather a head of steam; especially as a strategy to reduce grout joints in bathrooms and kitchen worktops. The market is steadily adjusting to this material, and it is becoming more commonplace at the point of sale.
Encaustic mash-ups make the grade. The dominant design trend remains the encaustic cement look and other riffs on the style where multiple patterns are mashed together to create a layered cohesive look.
