Tile of Spain, which represents over 125 Spanish tile manufacturers, is forecasting macro trends for 2018 which include: monochromatic colours, planks for wood and beyond, vintage looks, non rectified edges, encaustic mash-ups, large format thin tile and porcelain pavers. When looking at the coming year’s innovations as a whole, there is a reverence for clean, honest materials. Collections are being designed with broad expanses of installations in mind. Tile is not just an accent, it is literally everywhere: both indoors and out. The intentional hyper-distressed trend is beginning to give way to a more refined and stately vintage look, with a well-loved and maintained feel. 2018’s ceramics are all about the balance that consumers are struggling so hard to find in their daily 21st Century lives.
‘Wall tiles are an ideal way of introducing a welcome splash of colour and pattern to bathrooms,’ says Caroline Gow from Fired Earth. ‘Even a simple splashback can be enough to brighten up a bathroom or give a scheme a bit of an update without breaking the bank. Blues, greens and zesty citrus shades look particularly clean and fresh with white.’ Graphic, hexagonal prints are modern and striking for a high-end, architectural vibe, while wood-effect tiles look bang on trend laid in crisp, chevron patterns and distressed timber finishes. ‘Porcelain, wood-effect tiles are a great way of getting the look and feel of natural timber but are considerably more practical,’ explains Leanne Robey, designer at Ripples. ‘I use them to fill a wet room floor and even run them up the walls in showers because they’re great with water.’ Your choice of wall tile can make all the difference in a compact bathroom and with less vertical space to fill you might be able to splash out on more expensive glass and marbles that would’ve been beyond budget in a larger room.
